Sunday Recap – 11/22/09

Derek Brown | Blog | Sunday November 22 2009

This past Sunday, we discussed John 8:1-11 (link), and looked at the grace-giving ‘finger of God’, as compared to the Law-demanding finger of God in Exodus 31:18. Check out the sermon notes online here. The setlist is here:

  • Into the Arms of Jesus (Thad Cockrell) – Pablo and I heard this song, written by Vintage21’s Thad Cockrell, at an Acts 29 luncheon, and the melody is still in our heads, not to mention the very ‘priest-like’ lyrics that truly minister to the soul, and lead us to Jesus. The chorus is a reminder that His love will never fail, and it is easy enough to remember that we can sing it as a reminder throughout the week.
  • Only Your Blood is Enough (Neil Robins & Isaac Watts) – This song was to remind us that no religious duty or officer will ever lead us to heaven, or the blessings of God. It’s only by the atoning and sacrificial blood of Christ that we come to Christ. Such a great and necessary reminder of the Gospel for us. Doesn’t hurt that the song is great musically, and has a wonderful melody.
  • Come Ye Sinners (Joseph Hart) – Again, Pablo does a great job of leading the musical worship into worship by preaching. This song fit the message perfectly, and allows us to extend an invitation for people to consider Christ. It doesn’t matter how thirsty, weary, or guilty we are, Christ is available for His people.
  • Let Us Sing Again (Fanny Crosby & Pablo Mazariegos) – We sang this song last week, and since it’s new, sang it again for Communion this week. Pablo found this one somewhere online, and set it to a new tune. Great song that actually talks about, and puts into practice, the missional nature of communion. Here’s the lyrics (if you want, we may be able to get a recording of our tune):
  • Let us sing again the praise of the Saviour,

    How He died that we might know the Father’s love

    Let us tell to all the world His compassion,

    How He ever lives to plead for us above.

    Let us praise Him for the words full of comfort,

    That He left for us recorded long ago;

    He is near to every one that believeth,

    And His mercy to the faithful He will show.

    Let us praise Him for the soul-cheering promise,

    Of the mansions that our eyes shall yet behold;

    When we gather with the blest, in His kingdom,

    Where the riches of His grace can ne’er be told.

    CHORUS

    Let us tell (let us tell) the wondrous story,

    How He died (how He died) upon the tree;

    Unto Him be all the praise, and the glory;

    He hath suffered that from sin we might be free (we might be free).

    And that’s that. Next week is the awesome story of the adulterous woman, and how Jesus intervenes on her behalf!
