New Here?

We know that attending a church for the first time can be a little nerve-racking. You don’t know what to wear, what to do when you walk in, where to sit, what to do during the music, etc. We’ve tried to think of those questions ahead of time so you know the deal when you walk in. Here’s the scoop:

When and where do you meet?

We meet at Tipsy Teapot, a teahouse and cultural center located in the heart of uptown Greenville, NC. We have a public gathering every Sunday at 10:10am. We also meet throughout the city in Home Groups. You can find more information under “Community” in the top menu.

What will I experience when I walk in the door?

As soon as you park in the parking lot behind Tipsy Teapot, you’ll notice a couple of friendly faces at the door. They’ll greet you, make small talk, hand you a bulletin (which will have our contact info, some announcements, and space for taking notes) and a visitor bag (full of goodies and next step info), and be ready to answer any immediate questions you may have. There will be a welcome table full of information and Harmony Church stuff, like t-shirts and books.

Next, you’ll walk down a walkway, where you’ll see plenty of seats (sit where you want). On each chair, you’ll find a Bible (take one if you don’t own one-it’s yours). Around 10:10, someone will take the stage and start the service. There may be a set of songs (feel free to clap and sing), and then the teacher will take the stage and talk about Jesus for a while. Afterwards, there may be more music, and then a dismissal. You made it.

Who comes to Harmony?

Easy answer: people from all walks of life. Long answer: we’re of all races and genders and backgrounds. We’re young, we’re old. We live in the country, we love the city. We yearn desperately for the things of God, but we are all broken on the inside (even the leaders….especially the leaders). We love sports, we love shopping. We love to eat, we eat organic only. There are so many different opinions and backgrounds represented here…but one Thing unites us: Jesus Christ.

What if I don’t really like church?

That’s cool. We’re not your average church. We want to be a place where imperfect people feel welcomed. We want no one to be judged, no one to be hypocritical, and no truth to be hidden. We’re blatantly open and yet brutally honest. We’ll tell it like it is sometimes, but it’s always out of love and grace. The way Church ought to be.

What does the pastor talk about?

Short answer: Jesus. Long answer: Who Jesus is, what He has done for us, and why it matters for our lives. What implications does following Jesus have for us as people living in the 21st century? How does it affect our relationships? Our finances? Our schoolwork? Our jobs? Our time? Our talents? Why does everyone make a big deal about Jesus? Who is the Holy Spirit? Why can’t I be a Christian without church? Will I really be “left behind” if I don’t say some weird prayer? All this and more, including why golden retrievers are bad, and what Jesus and Chuck Norris have in common.

What should I wear?

Whatever is in your closet. We tend to be in jeans/shorts (depending on season) and t-shirts/polos/dresses. Dress casual. Be you.

What about kids?

We encourage children to become an integrated part of our community. As such, we provide something for them to do, during the message, that talks about the same thing that the pastor is talking about. We also provide a specific children’s service regularly, called Trailer Park, that allows for the parents to have a “date night” out, without their children. The children are supervised by adults, and are taught about Jesus in a relevant way while at the same time having fun with one another.

Can I bring someone along with me?

Yes. In fact, bring everyone you know. We are welcoming to everyone, and show no judgment or bias based on dress/gender/race/etc.

What kind of church is Harmony?

Non-denominational Protestant in the Reformed tradition. We do, however, have people from all kinds of backgrounds: from hardcore Catholic to former atheist and everything in between. You’re welcome, I promise.

I still have questions….
